Are You Skinny Outside but Obese Inside ?

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

I would like to share with you the article “Diet: Thin people may be fat inside” by Maria Cheng AP Medical Writer.  Here is something for you to think about.

“If it really is what’s on the inside that counts, then a lot of thin people might be in trouble. Some doctors now think that the internal fat surrounding vital organs like the heart, liver or pancreas — invisible to the naked eye — could be as dangerous as the more obvious external fat that bulges underneath the skin.waist_woman_tape

“Being thin doesn’t automatically mean you’re not fat,” said Dr. Jimmy Bell, a professor of molecular imaging at Imperial College, London. Since 1994, Bell and his team have scanned nearly 800 people with MRI machines to create “fat maps” showing where people store fat.

According to the data, people who maintain their weight through diet rather than exercise are likely to have major deposits of internal fat, even if they are otherwise slim. “The whole concept of being fat needs to be redefined,” said Bell, whose research is funded by Britain’s Medical Research Council.

Without a clear warning signal — like a rounder middle — doctors worry that thin people may be lulled into falsely assuming that because they’re not overweight, they’re healthy.

“Just because someone is lean doesn’t make them immune to diabetes or other risk factors for heart disease,” said Dr. Louis Teichholz, chief of cardiology at Hackensack Hospital in New Jersey, who was not involved in Bell’s research.

Even people with normal Body Mass Index scores — a standard obesity measure that divides your weight by the square of your height — can have surprising levels of fat deposits inside.

Of the women scanned by Bell and his colleagues, as many as 45 percent of those with normal BMI scores (20 to 25) actually had excessive levels of internal fat. Among men, the percentage was nearly 60 percent.

Relating the news to what Bell calls “TOFIs” — people who are “thin outside, fat inside” — is rarely uneventful. “The thinner people are, the bigger the surprise,” he said, adding the researchers even found TOFIs among people who are professional models.

According to Bell, people who are fat on the inside are essentially on the threshold of being obese. They eat too many fatty, sugary foods — and exercise too little to work it off — but they are not eating enough to actually be fat. Scientists believe we naturally accumulate fat around the belly first, but at some point, the body may start storing it elsewhere.”

Still, most experts believe that being of normal weight is an indicator of good health, and that BMI is a reliable measurement.

“BMI won’t give you the exact indication of where fat is, but it’s a useful clinical tool,” said Dr. Toni Steer, a nutritionist at Britain’s Medical Research Council.

Doctors are unsure about the exact dangers of internal fat, but some suspect it contributes to the risk of heart disease and diabetes. They theorize that internal fat disrupts the body’s communication systems. The fat enveloping internal organs might be sending the body mistaken chemical signals to store fat inside organs like the liver or pancreas. This could ultimately lead to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, or heart disease.

Experts have long known that fat, active people can be healthier than their skinny, inactive counterparts. “Normal-weight persons who are sedentary and unfit are at much higher risk for mortality than obese persons who are active and fit,” said Dr. Steven Blair, an obesity expert at the University of South Carolina.

For example, despite their ripples of fat, super-sized Sumo wrestlers probably have a better metabolic profile than some of their slim, sedentary spectators, Bell said. That’s because the wrestlers’ fat is primarily stored under the skin, not streaking throughout their vital organs and muscles.

The good news is that internal fat can be easily burned off through exercise or even by improving your diet. “Even if you don’t see it on your bathroom scale, caloric restriction and physical exercise have an aggressive effect on visceral fat,” said Dr. Bob Ross, an obesity expert at Queen’s University in Canada.

Because many factors contribute to heart disease, Teichholz says it’s difficult to determine the precise danger of internal fat — though it certainly doesn’t help.

“Obesity is a risk factor, but it’s lower down on the totem pole of risk factors,” he said, explaining that whether or not people smoke, their family histories and blood pressure and cholesterol rates are more important determinants than both external and internal fat.

When it comes to being fit, experts say there is no short-cut. “If you just want to look thin, then maybe dieting is enough,” Bell said. “But if you want to actually be healthy, then exercise has to be an important component of your lifestyle.”

One Extra Glass of Water to Drink and 500 Calories to Burn the Easy Way

Friday, January 9th, 2009

There are two simple things you can do to keep your New Year’s Resolutions to get healthier and lose some weight: drink more water and keep moving.  And I am not talking about vigorous exercises or 8 glasses of water every day.

glass

To change our life=habits, we need to change our lifestyle, to change our lifestyle takes longer than we expect, that is why all diets fail. Let’s be realistic: to change something in your life and stick to it takes more than a week or two, and even more than two- three months, am I right?

If you ask me how to start drinking more water and move more the easy way, I would say:

start your day with a glass of water before breakfast and get a puppy – just kidding about the puppy or not.

Why and how to drink more water.

We lose water every day by breathing, sweating, urinating, having a bowel movement – this is how we cleanse/detox our body from toxins.

Drinking more water helps us get rid of constipation, lose weight, lower blood pressure, get more energy, get rid of headaches, have healthier skin and complexion, have better digestion, ease PMS symptoms, etc.

Did you know that migraines can be caused by dehydration? Lightheadedness, weakness, extreme fatigue, muscle cramps, headaches, nausea, tingling of the limbs are the symptoms of dehydration?

To drink more water is easier than you think. Let me explain how:drink a glass of water (warm with half a lemon preferably) before breakfast and a cup of tea during or after breakfast.  It is already two glasses, and you haven’t even started your day yet! It is simple, isn’t it?

How to start moving without sweat.

First, why a puppy? In addition to my 11year old Aussie, we adopted another one year old puppy a couple of weeks ago. And guess what? With the same routine (two 40 min. walks a day) I started losing weight, because our walks now at a faster pace. They say young kids keep us young, well, young dogs keep us healthy  .

But you obviously don’t have to get a puppy to burn 102 cal. in 30 minutes by walking or 136 cal. by playing with him. There are other options for you.

Walking by itself will help you burn a lot of calories – maybe that is why European women are slimmer as well as New Yorkers.

Walking and calories (source: burncaloriesperhour.com) :

up stairs -272 calories in 30 min
down stairs102 calories in 30 min
inside at work gathering things102 calories in 30 min
for pleasure119 calories in 30 min
under 2 mph (very slow, strolling) - 68 calories in 30 min

Don’t have time to walk? What about going shopping:

non-groceries - 78 calories in 30 min
groceries, without cart85 calories in 30 min
groceries, with cart78 calories in 30 min

carrying – groceries – 85 calories in 30 min

It is all about moving. You can burn calories even without leaving a house:

ironing78 calories in 30 min
cooking85 calories in 30 min
washing car102 calories in 30 min
vacuuming, around home119 calories in 30 min
sweeping, inside (e.g., floors) – 112 calories in 30 min

washing dishes78 calories in 30 min
mopping119 calories in 30 min
multiple household tasks, light85 calories in 30 minvacuum
cleaning – light (e.g., dusting) – 85 calories in 30 min

Don’t want to clean a house? Well, I can understand it. So what’s left?

Kissing and hugging. They will help you burn calories (34 cal. in 30 minutes), reduce stress and boost your immune system.

And speaking about reducing stress, sex will help you both with stress and calories: 30 to 50 calories in 30 minutes! So, more sex = less calories and less stress – please have it in mind.

As you can see, there are a lot of ways to move and burn calories. Start with baby steps, keep it simple and you will be surprised with the results:

one extra glass of water before breakfast gives you extra 365 glasses of water a year;

moving 30 minutes a day can help you burn extra 3000 or more calories a month!

Let us be smart and take simple steps to feeling and looking fabulous.

And, as usual, don’t forget to breathe, smile and be happy.

How to Detox Your Mind

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Image via Wikipedia

A beautiful Fall season is a perfect time to find balance in our lifestyle and our body after stressful summer routine as well as to celebrate harmony and harvesting.  It is also the right time to detox our mind.

1. Try to take care of different areas of your life.

Because we, ladies, are full of emotions, stress is always in the air for us. So we have to think and maybe rethink / take care of our relationship issues, career choices, physical activities levels, spirituality.

The answer to the following questions will help you focus on what you need the most right now to eliminate some unnecessary stress:

Which area of your life (relationship, career, finances, physical activities, spirituality, education, health, social life, home environment) you think needs the most attention right now and why is that?

Which area of your life you think keep you in balance? (try these quizzes )

Where do you think you may need to spend more time and energy to create balance?

How satisfied we are in each areas of our life is very important for our overall balance. To find it, we have to start listening to our bodies and paying attention to areas we are dissatisfied the most.

2. Try Yoga class or Tai Chi class.

Yoga poses reduce stress levels, boost mood, and improve overall health. Studies show that your level of the stress hormone cortisol stay

s low even while you’re doing basic beginner yoga.

Tai chi -moving meditation – consists of slow, focused, deliberate moves that awaken your chi and allows it to flow unblocked throughout your body, improving your healthy well-being.

3. Try to meditate.

There are a lot of variations of basic meditation. One of them suggests sitting for a couple of minutes doing nothing but being aware of our breathing. Just sit still for a moment inhaling slowly through your nose, then exhaling long through your mouth.

What about you? What are your ideas of helping your mind be happier?

If you feel you might need help with one of my Holistic Health and Nutrition Programs for Women, let me know, and let us talk…

Breathe, smile and be happy.

Walk to Save a Relationship ?

Friday, October 17th, 2008

We know that a walk is good for us because it is an exercise shortcut as well as stress relief technique: it clears our mind and helps to get rid of frustration.

Girl walking with her dog.

Image via Wikipedia

It also might help to save our relationships if we are smart enough to walk for a walk away… from the argument.  Is it really  true? Then why it is so difficult to do so ?  When I was in my first marriage, my mother used to ask me to shut my  mouth, open the door and close it behind me at the beginning of my fight, before it got ugly.  Did I follow her piece of advice, at least once? Hmmmm.  A good news for me is that  I’ve learnt my lessons, even it took me a couple of marriages

What about you?

Unfortunately, a lot of women don’t know how to take advantage of  their life lessons, no matter how old they are.  I have a lot of clients who are very successful careerwise, but as for their private lives, they act as teenagers at their 30s, 40s and even in 60s!  And I always ask myself why that is ??!

P.S. Did you know that walnuts, almonds, pears, apples are natural stress busters? A bowl of oatmeal with walnuts and raisins is the best (quickest and healthiest) breakfast ever.

Almonds are rich in vitamin E,and we know they are very good for our skin. But have you ever tried almond’s butter to exfoliate?

As for apples and pears (can be used as a homemade facial), have them as healthy snacks all day long. more on stress busters

Are you asking the right question ?

Thursday, October 16th, 2008
Conversations Silhouettes by Kirsty Pargeter

At the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, I’ve learned how important it is to ask people the right questions. And I think”What is new and good? ” is the best question ever. People always start talking about bad things that happened to them after confirming that they are doing just fine. And after you refocus them on positive thinking, they realize that their life is not that bad and stressful as they thought it was. Next time you meet your friend or call her/him on the phone, try this trick: ask what new and good is going and wait. It is always fun to watch how people react. And if your friend cannot come up with anything new and good, encourage her/him to think harder and wait again.

Sometimes it takes time for us to realize that everything in our life is better than we imagine or assume. So if we ask ourselves every morning what new and good happened the day before, we do come up with some things we never even thought of. And as a matter of fact it is a very good stress relief technique. It always helps to:

P.S.

If you are really busy and don’t have enough time to take care of your skin, try this home-made facial for busy women: cut open one or two grapes and rub the juicy part of them on your face and neck. Don’t forget to rinse it off in 10 – 15 minutes. You can do it in the morning while you have breakfast or in the evening after work.
