Healthy Halloween Pumpkin Cookies – Yummm

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Halloween is the time when we have to remember that our kids are not the healthiest in the world and we must protect them from diabetes, obesity and heart disease which are are on the rise among children.

So, I would like to share with you this Healthy Recipe I found at www.foodnetwork.com

Why is it healthy?

Just in case if you don’t know, spices, like ginger and cinnamon boost our immune system helping fight with cold and flu.

Dark molasses are a great substitute for sugar as well as a good source of iron and B vitamins.

As for raisins, they can protect our oral, dental and bone health, be helpful for our vision and beneficial if you have constipation, weight gain or anemia.

Spiced Pumpkin Cookies

Ingredients

pumpkin cookies

2/3 cup whole-wheat pastry flour

2/3 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

3/4 cup canned plain pumpkin puree

3/4 cup packed light brown sugar

2 large eggs

1/4 cup canola oil

1/4 cup dark molasses

1 cup raisins

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat 3 baking sheets with cooking spray.

Whisk whole-wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, allspice and nutmeg in a large bowl.

Whisk pumpkin, brown sugar, oil and molasses in a second bowl until well combined. Stir the wet ingredients and raisins into the dry ingredients until no traces of dry ingredients remain. Drop the batter by level tablespoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing the cookies 1 1/2 inches apart.

Bake the cookies until firm to the touch and lightly golden on top, 10 to 12 minutes, switching the pans back to front and top to bottom halfway through. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool.

Is Your Bra Cancer Proof?

Monday, January 19th, 2009

I would like to share with you some studies about bra and breast cancer from the article ” Bras Shown to Cause Cancer” by Sheryl Walters, citizen journalist published in naturalnews.com

Studies show that this is a very real possibility. The reason is that regularly wearing a bra prevents lymph drainage and circulation, which can greatly increase the possibility of developing breast cancer.bra1

The lymphatic and circulatory systems are responsible for both delivering vital nutrients and clearing out toxins. When the body does not have access to nutrients or when it is under the attack of toxins, cancer may develop.

Regular bra wearing decreases the production of melatonin, which is a potent natural antioxidant and the hormone that regulates sleep, boosts the immune system and, incredibly fights aging. Balanced melatonin levels are essential for the body to fight many types of cancer, including breast cancer.

A study published in the European Journal of Cancer studied factors for breast cancer such as breast size and handedness. They discovered that premenopausal women who do not wear bras are less than half as likely to get breast cancer that those who regularly wear a bra. A study conducted by researcher David Moth revealed that even the lightest bras place pressure on the lymphatic system.

Researchers Singer and Grismaijer observed 4,500 women and their bra wearing practices. An amazing 3 out of 4 women who wore their bras 24 hours per day developed breast cancer. Women who wore their bras more than 12 hours per day had a 1 in 7 chance of getting breast cancer. 1 out 152 women who wore their bra less than 12 hours a day got breast cancer and an incredibly low 1 out of 168 women who rarely or never wear a bra developed breast cancer. Read the rest of the article.

Well, as you can see, sometimes we have to read info about researches in Europe and also use common sense.  I lost my sister to cancer three years ago, but long -long before that I used to remind her to take her bra off when she was at home and buy them without underwire if possible.

“There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them. ” Denis Waitley

So let us be choice smart, shall we?

Take a Break and Relax with Butterflies

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Are you tired? Feel stressed out? How about tension in back of neck or head?

Why not take a break and relax for a couple of minutes.

There are a lot of variations of basic meditation. One of them suggests sitting for a couple of minutes doing nothing but being aware of our breathing. Just sit still for a moment inhaling slowly through your nose, then exhaling long through your mouth.

You can also use imagery meditation sitting quietly and picturing some place, thing, or activity that makes you feel calm.

When you daydream, watch a bird in flight, stare up at the clouds, enjoy the ocean or a beautiful flower, your mind is fixed on one thought and that is a form of meditation, one of the powerful relaxation techniques.

Study shows that meditation changes blood flow to the brain and decreases anxiety while it improves other mental functions.

Take a look at these beautiful pictures taken by my son’s girlfriend while visiting North America’s largest enclosed butterfly conservatory at Niagara Falls. Aren’t  they amazing? Enjoy looking at the buttrflies as long as you feel like.  It will help you to relax and boost your immune system which is very important during cold and flu season. And don’t forget to

breathe, smile and be happy!

6 Instant Mood Boosters

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Women are very busy these days, as a matter of fact, they have always been. And as women, we know that, unfortunately, most of the time we don’t prioritize our health.

Listen to Podcast for extra tips and laughs

Let us think, for a second, what causes stress in our life? Well, if I say emotions and bad food choices, will you believe me? I am not sure, but it is true. As we remember, cortisol, the hormone your body produces when you are stressed, increases your appetite and promotes inflammation, reducing the body’s sensitivity to metabolic hormones. To reduce cortisol levels and normalize your metabolism, you must relax.

No time to de-stress? Think again! You can lower your stress level in a second with these on-the-spot mood boosters.

Start laughing.

Studies show that even forced laughter lowers cortisol and blood pressure instantly.

Self Portrait As A Stressed-Out Bride To Be

Start singing

Recent studies show that singing your favorite tunes is more beneficial than simply listening to them.

Call your friend or talk to your pet.

Study shows that making conversation with someone you care about causes the same kind of positive physiological changes that a massage does. To express your feelings and thoughts you can either call a friend or talk to your pet (pets are even better listeners).

Take a walk

Some fresh air and moderate exercise can help clear your mind and frustration or anger.

Squeeze a squishy ball

Start squeezing something, such as a squishy ball, to work away your tension.

Have some Dark Chocolate

Studies show that Dark Chocolate (70-75% of cocoa and higher) not only low blood pressure and clear the arteries, but also improves mood by boosting serotonin and endorphin levels in the brain. Take a piece of dark chocolate, close your eyes and relax.

If we don’t take care of ourselves, nobody will, but if something happens to us, who will take care of our children, our family? Studies show that more than 800.000 people a day take time off work because of a stress related illnesses.

Four Reasons to Eat Apples to Feel and Look Fabulous

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Do you remember an old saying about eating an apple a day to keep the doctors away? A lot of people underestimate the value of good old apples. The apple is one of the best whole fruits, a super food we must eat every day.

Well, all whole fruits contain valuable minerals, vitamins, enzymes and fiber. You are wondering why apples?

1. Fiber.

Apples are rich in fiber pectin, which we, ladies, need a lot to have clear complexion, metabolic balance, low blood pressure. Pectin (soluble fiber) lowers not only cholesterol but also body fats. How great is that?!!  Apples improve indigestion, and also help with some digestive concerns (for example, if you have a diarrhea – have an apple; if you have a constipation-have an apple!).

2. Antioxidants.

Apple is full of antioxidants to fight free radicals (which, we know, can cause illnesses) and support our immune system, heart and brain.

3. Detox.

Juicy Red Apple

Apples and their juice are perfect detox/cleanse food which is beneficial for the liver. They cleanse intestinal tract with fiber which is also very helpful if you want to maintain a healthy weight or to loose extra pounds. The pectin in apples not only reduces cholesterol, but also removes toxic metals, such as lead and mercury, and the residues of radiation.

4. Energy booster.

It is also a perfect healthy snack and natural energy booster. Apples low blood sugar and make us happier, and less stressful which benefit emotional depression. Nature gives us apples in the fall, when the nights get longer and seasonal depression might occur. Why is that?

But we have to remember that apples contain natural sugars, so we have to do some exercises to maintain the same weight if we decide to eat as many apples a day as we can.

And, unfortunately, apples contain the highest level of pesticides (along with peaches), and it means that we have to buy them organic (local only if you know the farmers and which fertilizer they use).

Let us remember about healing properties of apples and eat them with the seasons to feel and look fabulous.

Breathe, smile and be happy.

Get Healthier with Fall Detox and Exercise Shortcuts

Monday, October 27th, 2008

A beautiful Fall season is the right time not only to detox our mind to make it happier, but also to  balance our body with detox and exercise shortcuts to make it healthier.

Fall Detox

To reach our body balance, and we call it a metabolic balance, we have to change our food and nutrition preferences, experimenting and making choices based on our bio-individuality.

As we know, processed foods contain chemically derived ingredients our bodies don’t know how to read. It creates metabolic disaster-imbalance.

Légumes

Coupled with chronic stress and low level of exercises this blank (no nutrients) food contributes to chronic inflammation which in other words it leads to imbalance in our body.

Toxic chemicals in the water we drink and the air we breathe also affect our metabolic imbalance and contribute to inflammation in our body which leads to illnesses.

Fall is the right time for an easy fall detox/cleanse with seasonal whole foods. We have to incorporate in our diet as many as possible seasonal, local and freshly harvested:greens (kale, dandelion, beet greens, etc.), vegetables (fall squashes, beets, carrots, cauliflower, onions, garlic, zucchini, pumpkin, etc) fruits (avocado, apples, pears, kiwi, watermelon, etc.) beans (mung beans, lentils, etc.) nuts (walnuts, pistachios, pumpkin seeds).

Foods from plant sources

They all are full of fiber and help elimination which is the most important part for any gentle detox/cleanse you can do yourself.

Don’t forget to enjoy local harvest in juices and smooths to drink in the morning and as a snack.

You can always use some fruits and vegetables for homemade cleansing or rejuvenating facials (tomatoes, avocado, grapes, watermelon, apples, pears, etc.).

Exercise Shortcuts

We are moving towards Winter, and it means that the days are getting shorter and shorter following naturally after the many long days of light.  But there is no excuse for us to exercise less because we don’t have time. Why? Well, we always can find exercise shortcuts:

* park your car as far as possible;

Odessa / Odesa

* take stairs whenever you can;

(this is a picture of famous Potemkin’s Stairs from my native city Odessa, Ukraine. I used to walk up

all 192 steps).

* get up every fifteen minutes to stretch and deep breathe which helps reduce stress and detox;

* dance / move / jump / stretch in the kitchen while you preparing a meal;

* use more bending and stretching any time you clean the house, do gardening or talk on the phone (you can do the whole working out routine while text massaging).

We have to learn how to prioritize our health, our relationships, our jobs, etc., to sort them out and start a wonderful journey to wellness – journey that will help us to get back our happy mind and healthy body.

Let us be smart, patient and full of a sense of humor if we want to feel and look fabulous this fall.

Breathe,smile and be happy.

Do it yourself Massage Tips

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

More than 75% of health problems can be related to stress. We know that one of the best tress-relief tools and techniques is a body massage.  I would like to share with you the article “Massage-You can Do It Yourself” by Michael Tasker where he explains how easily you can self-massage your body. These are very helpful tips for us to use, especially nowadays, with our economy situation:

A good massage after spa

Qi Gong Tapping is a form of self-massage is commonly used by many Qi Gong and Tai Chi practitioners while warming up before their meditative practices. This can be adopted as a method to energize yourself first thing in the morning or perhaps before a physical workout. Start by forming your hands into a loose fist so that you can firmly tap your body from head to toe along the meridian pathways. The first step is to tap along your arms both inside and outside. Then tap your torso down the front of your chest, continuing down to the front of your thighs. Repeat the tapping on the inside, outside, and back of your legs to cover the entire lower body. Finally, tap along your neck and behind your back to cover the remaining areas. This practice can be repeated several times, until your feel your body warm up from the increased blood flow. Remember, one of the benefits of massage is to facilitate the increase in blood flow.

Abdominal self-massage is best used after meals to improve digestion or by women during their menstrual cycle. To perform abdominal massage, place one hand over the other as they lay above your naval. Breathe deeply as your move your hands together in a circular-motion around your belly in a clock-wise direction. The clock-wise direction is synchronous with the digestive pathway of your colon. Repeat this motion for several minutes focusing your mind on your hands and breathe to warm your abdomen and improve circulation.

Reflexology is a system of treatment where specific points on the hands and feet are used to improve the health and functioning of the entire body. You can benefit from this practice even without a through understanding of reflexology charts. Use some basic massage oil or hand lotion to gently rub all of your fingers and toes. Continue to rub your palms and the soles of your feet, including the back of your hand and tops of your feet. Pay attention to any tender spots you find so that you can focus more on these areas. You will soon discover which places feel the best and which ones need more attention. By adopting a massage session each day, the tension that is accumulated in these areas through the day can be relieved.

An overall ear massage can greatly benefit our health. With the use of your thumb and index finger you need to rub the outer edge of the ear, which is also called the helix. Follow the helix down the ear until you reach your earlobe. Pull gently on your earlobe several times. Move above your ear lobe and begin to massage each of the remaining areas of your ear. The tragus, which is located just above your earlobe, is very helpful to activate the mind and relieve headaches.”

Reflexology Path

What about you? Have you ever tried reflexology or ear massage yourself?

What about doing it with your partner?

By the way, kids love reflexology massage at any age (my husband has been addicted to it for decades).

Breathe, smile and be happy.
