Tips on Breast, Colon, Ovarian… Cancer Prevention Diet

October is a Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the time when we all think and talk about breast cancer early detection. But did you know that by the time a cancerous breast lump of less than one inch in diameter is detected, a tumor will have been growing for five years?f

Studies show that more than 60% of all cancers can be prevented with healthier lifestyle, including diet, physical activity and weight.

So maybe it is the right time to think about cancer prevention in general, and start taking care of ourselves right now in order to be healthy and feel fabulous five, ten and even 50 years from now…

Here are some tips on preventing cancers of specific organs with the right foods.

* Vegetables: decrease the cancer risk of most every organ in the body.

* Fruits: decrease the cancer risk of every organ except for gallbladder, liver, prostate and kidney;

* Vitamin C: in food, decrease the cancer risk of the cervix, pancreas, stomach, lung, bladder, mouth, esophagus.

Sources: Asparagus, avocados, berries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cantaloupe, collards, dandelion greens, dulse, grapefruit, kale, lemons, mangos, mustard greens, onions, oranges, papayas, parsley, green peas, sweet peppers, persimmons, pineapple, radishes, spinach, strawberries, Swiss chard, tomatoes.

* Carotenoids: in food, decrease the cancer risk of the cervix, breast, colon, rectum, stomach, lung, bladder, esophagus.

Sources: carrots, apricots, mangoes, squash, sweet potatoes, grapefruit, spinach, kale, collard greens, cayenne pepper, tomatoes, berries, plums, legumes, grains, seeds.

* Selenium: in food, decrease the cancer risk of the lung

Sources: wheat germ, brewers yeast, Brazil nuts, cashew nuts, lentils, sunflower seeds, oily fish;

* Whole grains: decrease cancer of the stomach

Sources: barley, brown rice, millet, oats, buckwheat, amaranth, bulgur, quinoa.

* Insoluble fiber: decrease cancers of the breast, colon, rectum, pancreas.

Sources: bran, whole grains, raw fruits, dark green leafy vegetables, sprouts, legumes, seeds, and nuts.

* Omega -3 fats decrease the risk of developing cancer in general, and decrease its rate of growth.

Sources: salmon, fish oil, flax seed, walnuts;

* Sunshine and vitamin D in foods: decrease the cancer risk of breast, ovarian and colon.

Sources: fish, eggs, dandelion greens, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, parsley, nettle, vegetable oil.
